The DMS is a comprehensive system that is meant to facilitate denial of service to illegal devices on mobile networks within the country.
Such devices include SIM boxes, counterfeit, substandard, non-type approved and stolen handsets. As you may appreciate, this system will therefore aimed at protecting consumers.
We have, however, noted the concerns raised by COFEK in respect to the need for wider consultation with consumers and other stakeholders on the device management system.
In this respect, CA will convene a meeting with COFEK and other stakeholders soon to discuss the system.
In its implementation plan, the Authority had also made provision to carry out consumer awareness on the DMS and the benefits arising from the system.
To allay you fears, I wish to assure you that the system is not intrusive at all and therefore does not infringe on the privacy of consumers.
Christopher Wambua, Acting Director, Consumer and Public Affairs, Communications Authority of Kenya (CA)
